In a world where online privacy is increasingly under threat and ads are becoming more invasive, AdGuard Home stands out as a powerful, user-friendly solution for protecting your entire network. Whether you're tired of intrusive ads, concerned about data tracking, or simply want more control over what your devices access, AdGuard Home can help.
What is AdGuard Home?
AdGuard Home is a free, open-source DNS server that blocks ads, trackers, malicious websites, and telemetry at the network level. Unlike browser-based ad blockers, which only filter traffic within the browser, AdGuard Home filters DNS requests across all devices connected to your network—including smartphones, smart TVs, IoT devices, and gaming consoles.
Essentially, AdGuard Home works like a personal DNS resolver with advanced filtering capabilities. It allows you to control what domains your devices can access, ensuring a cleaner, faster, and more private browsing experience.
Features of AdGuard Home
1. Network-Wide Ad Blocking
AdGuard Home stops ads before they even load—whether it’s in a browser, mobile app, or on a smart TV. Since it operates at the DNS level, it's effective against most types of advertising.
2. Privacy Protection
It blocks domains known for tracking user behavior, data mining, or delivering telemetry, ensuring your browsing activity stays private.
3. Custom DNS Rules
You can whitelist or blacklist any domain, allowing for granular control. Want to block YouTube on your kid’s tablet? Or allow a site that’s mistakenly flagged? You can manage it all from the web UI.
4. Detailed Query Logs and Statistics
Get insights into DNS queries, blocked domains, top clients, and more. This transparency helps you understand what’s happening on your network.
5. Parental Controls & Safe Browsing
AdGuard Home supports safe search features and adult content filters, making it a great tool for family households.
6. DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH), DNS-over-TLS (DoT), and DNSCrypt
Encrypt your DNS queries to protect against snooping by ISPs and other third parties.
How AdGuard Home Works
At its core, AdGuard Home acts as a DNS server—when a device on your network makes a DNS request (e.g., asking for the IP of facebook.com), AdGuard checks the request against its filters. If the domain is on a blocklist (e.g., an ad server or tracker), AdGuard returns a null response or a redirect, effectively blocking the content.
If the domain is clean, it forwards the request to an upstream DNS provider like Cloudflare, Google DNS, or your own configured resolver.
